The NZ Lizards Database has been created based on the vision of Trent Bell. Trent
is a herpetologist, formerly based at Landcare Research and now operating as EcoGecko
Consultants. Trent can be contacted directly at

This project was funded by the New Zealand Terrestrial and Freshwater Biodiversity Information System (TFBIS)
fund, administered by the New Zealand Department of Conservation, with additional
funds from Landcare Research's Herpetology Capability.
The wealth of knowledge on New Zealand lizards contained in these databases has
been built up over the last century of observation, literature, research and conservation.
Tony Whitaker and Bruce Thomas freely gave permission to digitise the NZ Lizards
annotated bibliography published by the Department of Scientific and Industrial
Research (DSIR) in 1989.
Benno Kappers (DOC Herpetofauna Administrator) and Grant Norbury were instrumental
during the early project planning stages. Aaron McGlinchy and Grant Norbury gave
invaluable assistance and Don Newman, Geoff Patterson and Susan Walker were major
backers of the database during the proposal stage. Kathy O’Halloran and Heather
Russell covered the contractual and milestone processes while Todd Travis and Mark
Etches assisted with the budgeting of the databases. Steve Pawson contributed to
the strategy of enabling access and digitisation of relevant documents.
Nick Spencer and Margaret Anderson developed the technical aspects of the database
and, with Karen Scott, delivered the database online. Jerry Cooper liaised with
GBIF on the development of the NZ Lizards Database. Tanja Webster and Denise O'Neil
were invaluable assets in searching for references and links to online literature
for the NZ Lizards Database bibliography. Tanja, Margot Bowden and Edward Doonerwind
co-ordinated interloans between other libraries. Sarah Herbert assisted in correcting
parsed data into the database. Trudi Webster assisted with the development of the
species synopses. Tanja, Margot and Mandy Spearing facilitated the digitisation
of some theses, major publications and reports. Roger Carran and Tracey MacDougall
conducted further scanning of some relevant literature. Craig Briggs assisted with
cross-referencing DOC BioWeb Herpetofauna data into Ecological Regions &
Districts and Land Environments NZ data.
We thank the authors for their permission and the research repositories below and
