The specific name means 'black-soled', which can be misleading since many have yellowish soles.

Chatham Islands skink; Chathams skink
A medium sized skink (Size up to 98 mm, total length to 190 mm). Dorsal surfaces various shades of grey, brown, black or green, and variously uniform, flecked and/or striped. Lateral surfaces usually with a broad dark brown or black stripe above (sometimes rudimentary or absent) that may be bordered by thin pale stripes, and grey, brown or black below, often flecked. Regrown tail may be reddish above and below.Ventral surfaces grey, brown or yellow. Throat grey. Regrown tail may be reddish above and below. Soles of feet yellow, brown or black. Snout fairly blunt.
