This species can be distinguished from O. sp. 'West Otago', O. chloronoton and O. lineoocellatum from the lack of markings on tail (Jewell 2008)

Mackenzie Basin skink; Mackenzie skink
A large skink (80-93 mm SVL; Jewell 2008). Dorsal surfaces borwn, grey-brown, or olive-green, densely patterned with occelli. Dorsolateral cream stripe may be present. Lateral surfaces dark brown band upper with dark flecking, grey below. Ventral surfaces uniform mid to dark grey. Tail not marked. Anterior suboculars 2. Lamellae 24-25 (Jewell 2008).
