A medium to large skink species (84 mm SVL in the Mercury and Aldermen Islands, 114 mm SVL in the Poor Knights Islands, Jewell 2008). Dorsal surfaces brown or olive-brown, usually with light or dark flecks, or uniform. Lateral surfaces grey-brown with paler flecks outlined with brown or black, darker in the shoulder area. 'Teardrop' marking beneath the eye present, sometimes as part of series of denticulate markings along lips. Ventral surfaces cream, grey or brown, lightly or heavily speckled with black. Throat heavily speckled with black . Mid-body scale rows 37-44 (Poor Knights populations), 32-36 (southern populations); ventral scale rows 88-97 (Poor Knights populations), 72-88 (southern populations) (Jewell 2008).
