This species may be mistaken for Oligosoma aeneum, but note the single frontoparietal scale and longer tail in proportion to SVL.
A single frontoparietal scale present across head, whereas all other NZ skink species have two.
Australian skink; Rainbow skink
A tiny skink (40-55mm SVL, Jewell 2008). Dorsal surfaces uniform grey-brown to dark brown, sometimes with thin mid-dorsal stripe. Lateral surfaces with broad lateral stripe edged in by thin pale stripes. Ventral surfaces creamy yellow or white, unmarked. Throat pale grey-white, usu. with faint grey streaks. Eggs 8-10mm long, white, leathery; usu. 2-5 per clutch, but communal nesting is known.
